Mortech Industries New Zealand Limited have recently released an organically certified embalming fluid which will address the environmental concerns expressed by the public and provide a safer working environment for professionals employed in the industry. In the research and development of this fluid, it became apparent that the bereaved require the opportunity to spend time with their deceased and that there is very little requirement for the body to maintain its natural state beyond this period. Usually this is for three to four days, but it is occasionally extended beyond this period at the request of family that may be travelling from aboard to pay their last respects to the deceased.

About the developers
Mortech Industries New Zealand Limited is owned by Adrian and Kate Featherstone and is a company supplying products to the funeral industry, hospitals and laboratories.  Adrian has 41 years experience in mortuary employment and has practised as an embalmer since 1991. He is a member of the New Zealand and Australian Embalmers Associations and a member of the National Funeral Directors Association of America. Mortech Industries is an affiliate member of the Waikato Bay of Plenty Funeral Directors Association and Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand.  Kate comes from a nursing and management background.  Adrian has worked with Southwell Products Ltd., who developed the unique mixture of oxy-chlorine species to inhibit the proliferation of spoilage mechanisms. Jointly this expertise was employed in using this technigue  to suit the purpose of treating human remains in an environmentally responsible manner.

Research and development
Mortech Industries New Zealand Limited in conjunction with Southwell Products Limited has produced a completely organic, biodegradable product for the treatment of human remains.  Mortech Supreme™ 2 in 1 is the result of extensive research and development, including practical trials and peer review, in the search for a non-hazardous alternative which is not only safe for the environment, but safe for those employed in the industry and family who may be involved in the final stages of  preparation of the deceased.
Feedback from the funeral industry has given us an insight into the environmental concerns of the general public regarding the use of embalming chemicals. With the use of Mortech Supreme™ 2 in 1 the deceased can be safely embalmed, allowing the rituals associated with the grief and bereavement process to proceed unobstructed.

What is it?
Mortech Supreme™ 2 in 1 is a mixture of oxy-chloride species which formulate a very effective potent broad spectrum antimicrobial sanitiser. It will achieve a 99.999% (5 log) kill rate of bacteria and viruses associated with a deceased within 60 seconds of contact. This solution is recognised by ERMA (NZ), NZFSA and listed as an organic input with Assurequality (government agency) and Bio-Gro (NZ).

How does it work?
Mortech Supreme™ 2 in 1 is a biodegradable solution formulated to effectively inhibit decomposition for up to 5 days. The main chemical component is a powerful oxidising agent that penetrates the cell wall and reacts directly with the amino acids and the ribonucleic acid (RNA) in the cell. It is an active residual disinfectant, and removes and prevents the growth of bio film. Mortech Supreme™ 2 in 1 is used in various dilutions as both an arterial and cavity fluid. Because Mortech Supreme™ 2 in 1 is effective in a wide pH range and does not dehydrate the tissues, Mortech Supreme™ 2 in 1 does not require co-injection fluids or humectants. When the solution comes into contact with the bacteria, the bacteria are destroyed and the solution is exhausted.  Any remaining solution lies in wait for any new bacteria re-growth. When the entire amount of  the solution is exhausted the bacteria proliferate to a level where the natural decomposition process recommences unimpeded.

Environmentally safe
Mortech Supreme™ 2 in 1 is a non-toxic biodegradable solution that leaves a residue equivalent to half a teaspoon of salt.  It enables the natural putrefaction process to continue soon after interment of the body.

Application
For optimum results, it is imperative that the sanitiser comes into contact with bacteria in the body tissue and fluids. It is recommended that the supplier’s specific procedures be closely followed. For maximum distribution and diffusion of fluid, the body should be elevated off the table by body supports to minimize any restriction. Injection should be at a reasonably high pressure 70—100 psi in pulsation mode and drainage as usual. Inject the first 250 - 500mls under closed drainage followed by intermittent drainage. The objective is to flush the vascular circulatory system until the discharge is very diluted or clear of blood. Occasionally flex and rotate limbs to encourage fluid distribution and discharge, along with massage to any areas affected by postmortem lividity. Results
Mortech Supreme™ 2 in 1 produces a very natural, soft feel and texture to the skin. It easily removes the postmortem discolouration and fills out the tissues to a natural appearance. Although immediate results are impressive, they noticeably improve over the following 24 hours. Its supple results leave the limbs flexible making dressing easier. This is particularly important when the family is involved in this aspect of preparation of the deceased.

When to use Mortech Supreme™ 2 in 1 can be used with confidence and is suitable for all types of cases if used to supplier’s instructions. As a “one solution does all”, it can be used for arterial and cavity treatment, and as a topical sanitiser. The embalming solution covers a wide range of body conditions and body types, and is very effective in the treatment of medium to high risk infectious cases such as HIV and HepC which are listed in the Managing Health and Safety Risks in New Zealand Mortuaries guidelines as not recommended as suitable for embalming or viewing.  These bodies can now be prepared to a safe condition for the families to view and touch without any concern of contamination or risk to health. Embalming of jaundice cases show a 75 – 80% reduction in the depth of bilirubin discolouration. Mortech Supreme 2 in 1 does not produce any conversion from bilirubin to biliverdin. Dehydration and formaldehyde greying problems are no longer a concern.

User friendly
Mortech Supreme™ 2 in 1 is non hazardous classification and eliminates the need for expensive special storage and transportation requirements. It is non-fuming and enables the level of respiratory protection to be downgraded to P2 level. Cavity fluid can be injected via the embalming machine without causing any damage to the components of the machine.
